Signals passed at danger (SPADs) on Network Rail controlled infrastructure - Table 5.25

Number of signals passed at danger (SPADs) without authority on the mainline. Each SPAD is assigned a score between zero (no risk) and 28 (very high risk)

Notes
SPADs are used by the industry to monitor performance in relation to operational safety. When a SPAD is identified, they are assigned a severity rating and grouped into the following bands:

- Severity rating of 0 to 15 are classified as not a significant risk;
- Severity rating of 16 to 19 are classified as potentially significant; and
- Severity rating of 20 and above are classified as potentially severe.

Revisions:
(r) A quality assurance review of SPAD data at RSSB in November 2016 found that a total of 16 SPADs between October 2007 and June 2015 were incorrectly classified. These have now been updated.

For the latest information on data revisions, please see the revisions log:

Other datasets:
1.       RSSB publishes a monthly report of SPADs. The latest reports are available here: http://www.rssb.co.uk/risk-analysis-and-safety-reporting/safety-intelligence/safety-performance-reports
2.       ORR publishes an annual statistical release on rail safety statistics, which incorporates mainline, London Underground and non-mainline network data. The latest release is available here: http://orr.gov.uk/statistics/published-stats/statistical-releases
3.       ORR publishes an annual health & safety report, commenting on safety trends in Great Britain. The latest report is available here: http://orr.gov.uk/publications/reports/health-and-safety
4.       A comparison of safety performance across Europe, including number of SPADs, is available from the European Union Agency for Railways. These data can be accessed here: https://erail.era.europa.eu/safety-indicators.aspx
