(p)          Data are provisional

Notes:
1.       Central government grants: net payments to/from train operating companies and grants to concessions (London Overground and Merseyrail).
2.       Passenger Transport Executive (PTE) grants - payment to PTEs for national rail services. Prior to 2016-17, under the terms of the franchise agreement a proportion of the subsidy for the Northern franchise were issued as grants to PTEs who in turn paid these to the train operator. From 2016-17 under the terms of the new franchise agreement all subsidies are paid directly to the train operator.
3.       Direct rail support - the net grant to Network Rail and, during the construction of the High Speed 1 route, to London and Continental Railways.
4.       Other elements of government support - composed of central government expenditure on major projects, support to arms length bodies including British Transport Police and Transport Focus, a grant to British Rail to finance its residual activities, and other ad hoc rail projects.
5.       Government support prior to 2017-18 adjusted using the June, 2018 GDP Deflators.
6.       Includes loans issued by DfT to Network Rail (as of 1 September 2014), net of the drawdown fee and interest paid to DfT.
7.       Freight grants - grants paid by government to encourage the movement of freight by rail.
