Passenger revenue by ticket type - table
Great Britain 2002-03 Q1 to 2012-13 Q3 (£ millions)
Background:
Passenger revenue includes all ticket revenue and miscellaneous charges associated with passenger travel on national railways, e.g. car parking charges. For tickets involving travel on London Transport, receipts have been apportioned. Passenger revenue does not include government support or grants.

Key results:
Annual:
(i) Total franchised passenger revenue increased to over £7billion for the first time in 2011-12. This was an increase of 9.2% on 2010-11 and was the highest percentage growth recorded since 2007-08 when the increase was over 10%. After a 24.1% increase between 2009-10 and 2010-11, revenue for non-franchised operators fell by 3.6% in 2011-12 to £43.9million with the closure of Wrexham & Shropshire in January 2011 contributing to the fall.

(ii) Franchised passenger revenue from ordinary fares was £5.4billion in 2011-12. This is an increase of 9.7% on 2010-11 and is the highest percentage year-on-year growth since 2007-08. Since the time series began in 2002-03, annual revenue from ordinary fares has more than doubled.

(iii) In 2011-12, franchised passenger revenue for season tickets reached £1.8billion, an increase of 7.7% on 2010-11. This was the highest percentage year-on-year growth since 2008-09.

Quarterly:
(i) In 2012-13 Q3, total franchised passenger revenue reached £1.96billion, an 8.3% increase on 2011-12 Q3. This is the highest amount of revenue generated within any quarter since the time series began. Non-franchised passenger revenue rose to a record high of £12.7million in 2012-13 Q3; a 16.1% increase compared to the same quarter last year.

(ii) In 2012-13 Q3, franchised passenger revenue from ordinary fares was £1.5billion, an increase of 8.5% compared to 2011-12 Q3. This is the highest amount of franchised passenger revenue generated from ordinary fares within a Q3 since the time series began.

(iii) In 2012-13 Q3, franchised season ticket revenue was £486 million, a 7.9% increase on the same quarter last year. This is the highest amount of franchised season ticket revenue in a Q3 since the time series began.
Methodology:
The rail industry’s central ticketing system, LENNON, is the basis for passenger revenue data. LENNON holds information on the vast majority of national rail tickets purchased in Great Britain and is used to allocate the revenue from ticket sales between train operating companies (TOCs).
LENNON contains two datasets; pre-allocation (sales) and post-allocation (earnings). Passenger usage statistics in NRT are based on the post-allocation dataset. Allocations are created for each ticket group by ORCATS, dependant on sales levels. These allocations are principally used to apportion journeys between TOCs.

From 2012-13 Q2, ORR is publishing ordinary fares disaggregated by ticket type: Advance, Anytime (Peak), Off Peak (including Super Off Peak) and Other (non-LENNON tickets and promotional tickets). It is not possible to provide a time series prior to 2011-12 for the disaggregated data as LENNON only maps the data back to 2011-12 Q1.

ORCATS is a mathematical model which uses a similar logic to journey planning systems and identifies passenger ‘opportunities to travel’ from an origin station to a destination station using timetable information.

Total franchised passenger revenue MAA is the moving annual average.

The column ‘Total franchised passenger revenue (MAA) 2012-13 prices’ is calculated using the July ‘All Items’ Retail Prices Index (RPI).

Notes, revisions and proposed changes:
New methodology has been applied from 2007-08 to improve the categorisation of ticket type. Therefore, for the individual series' on ordinary fares and season tickets direct comparisons between data from 2007-08 and earlier years should not be made.

Data for non-franchised operators were not collected prior to 2008-09 Q3. LENNON data for non-franchised operators includes First Hull Trains and Grand Central but not Heathrow Express. Between 2008-09 Q4 and 2010-11 Q4, the data also included Wrexham and Shropshire but they ceased trading on 28 January 2011.

Changes
2012-13 Q2 is the first quarter disaggregated ticket type information has been published, although the data is published for 2011-12 Q1 onwards.
Quality:
As part of our commitment to continuous quality improvement, we will be producing a full quality report for all NRT statistics, in line with the Government Statistical Service (GSS) standards for quality reporting. The quality measures below provide a summary of the key dimensions of statistical quality.

Relevance:
Users of passenger revenue data are consulted for their feedback by a number of methods, including the NRT portal survey and regular meetings of the Rail Statistics Management Group.

If you have any feedback on this data or any of our statistics, please contact rstats@orr.gsi.gov.uk

Users of passenger revenue statistics are currently being consulted about their use of this dataset. We would like to know what you use this data for, we would greatly appreciate if you could complete this quick on-line survey (it should take a maximum of two minutes) http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/useofNRT.
Accuracy:
Passenger revenue data are rarely revised. The only circumstance in which passenger revenue figures would be revised is when there is a change to the revenue figures in LENNON. These are likely to occur within the first two weeks after the end of each period. To minimise the risk, ORR waits at least one month before extracting the data from LENNON.

Timeliness/Punctuality:
The latest data in this release refers to 2012-13 Q3, 1 October to 31 December 2012.

Accessibility & clarity:
Passenger revenue data are provided by sector and by ticket type. Lower levels of disaggregation are not possible as they are commercially sensitive.

Comparability & coherence:

Any series breaks are explained in the 'notes, revisions and proposed changes' section. Any future amendments will also be highlighted in this section.
