Annual rail safety statistics on mainline rail, London Underground, and other non-mainline networks (trams, metros, other light rail, minor and heritage railways) reporting on fatalities and injuries to passengers, members of the public and workforce in Great Britain. It also covers train accidents and (annual and quarterly) number of signals passed at danger (SPADs). These incidents are reported to the Office of Rail and Road under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulation (RIDDOR).

Key results

  • There were eight non-workforce fatalities (passenger or public) in the year April 2022 to March 2023: three occurred in mainline stations and two at the platform-train interface; two passenger fatalities at stations on the London Underground; and one fatality from a collision between a member of the public and a tram.
  • There were two workforce fatalities in the year April 2022 to March 2023, same as the previous year. Both of these were road traffic collisions which occurred on the mainline.
  • There were 11 people who died in accidents while trespassing in the year April 2022 to March 2023. They involved ten trespass fatalities on the mainline and one on the non-mainline. There were six fatalities at level crossings which involved four pedestrians and one motorcyclist on the mainline and a member of the public on a scooter at a footpath crossing on the non-mainline network. There were 300 suicide or suspected suicide attempts on the mainline, of which 236 were fatalities.
